In search of the perfect land

It took us a while to find the land that will be the perfect space for the Lithica Gathering. Since Lithica is all about immersing in the wilderness we felt that the place can not have too many commodities of the modern world...

We knew that you, as a participant, will actually appreciate a pristine lake as the shower, a green forest as the bedroom, and a latrine in the forest as a 5* toilet. Right?

On top of that, we didn’t want to be close to any big roads or any human dwellings for that matter. When coming from busy areas, the silence of only nature sounds is something very special and an important part of truly being able to connect again with the rhythm of nature.

And last, but not least, what if we could find a place that is truly disconnected from the modern world? A place without 5G, without 4G, without 3G, without E… without even any cellphone reception at all?

Is that even possible?

Oh yes. It is.

Welcome to Skålid in Fyresdal, Norway

Two of the board members of Lithica live in a tiny town in Norway: Fyresdal in the province of Telemark. Here live only 1200 people, spread out over 1300 square kilometers! Yes, you read that right, we have less than 1 person per square kilometer. It is one of the examples of why Norway is one of the most sparsely populated areas in Europe with on average only 16 people per square kilometer.

“Ah,” you say “But this place is probably somewhere very, very, very far North? Amidst the reindeer herding Sami of Lapland? Of maybe even on the isle of Svalbard?”

”Ah,” we will say back to you “No, it’s not.”

This gem of a wild place is actually only a 4-hour drive south (!) of Oslo. If you decide to take one of the many ferries from the Netherlands or Denmark to Kristiansand in the south of Norway, it is only 3 hours by car. But, we will let you know, it is the same distance from this special place to any kind of bigger town.

Wild nature on an organic cow farm

Of course, Fyresdal is not completely disconnected from modern life. We do have cars here. And 4G. And most houses are actually connected to fiber. But in our municipality, there are places that are not. Places that have no phone coverage, places that are not connected to the general water and/or power supplies. Places like Skålid.

This farm has been in the Skålid family for many generations. The place is about half an hour’s drive from the town center at the end of the small road. She has her own water turbine for electricity and farms cows, with an organic label. The cows basically roam the mountains surrounding the farm in summer and we can promise you the meat is utterly delicious and can’t be compared with anything you can find in a supermarket. No, it’s of course not wild meat, but pretty close!

(By the way, the cows can not roam on the Gathering lands. So you don’t have to worry about a friendly cow face waking you up in the morning!)

The land we can hold the gathering is close to a pretty big lake and connected to a forest where you can pitch your tent for the week. All this is surrounded by the beautiful mountains of Vest-Telemark.
