The Lithica Gathering

come join us in Norway

July 5-11, 2024

The Lithica Gathering

A week of Rewilding, Nature, Workshops, Storytelling, Sharing & Community in Norway

Who among us has not thought from time to time how much more fulfilling and fun it would be to live as a clan where we share skills, stories, songs, laughter, tears, meals, chores and so much more with a multi-generational group in a natural, pristine environment?

We have often pondered ourselves: why is it that some of the few wild places left on Earth are preserved for wild animals and wild plants but not for wild humans?

This gathering is the beginning of realising our vision of Lithica-Rewilding-Humans and a fundraiser to purchase and protect lands for wild beings and their future generations.

Looking forward to hearing from you and meeting you at the fire!

Who is it for?

People who want to connect with their truest, wildest selves. People who want to support others on the same journey. People who dream of becoming part of Lithica and help shape our future.

Camping and rewilding in the rolling forests of Hedmark

The Gathering terrain will be in a beautiful meadow beside a stream. We are so lucky to be able to drink this pure water. This is a very sparsely populated area by humans which allows the wildlife to have extra roaming grounds. We may be fortunate to see elk, and the tracks and signs of many of the areas big predators including wolf, fox, lynx, and members of the weasel family.

In the soft mossy forest next to the meadow we will be camping during our stay. We will bathe in the stream or the nearby river and lakes, our toilets will be simple pit latrines in the forest.

Due to fire regulations in summer in Norway, we will only have one main campfire to gather around. For personal cooking of breakfast, lunch, and/or snacks we ask you to bring your own camping cooking stove or have only ready-to-eat dry foods with you.

In the evening we will have our meal together, which will be (partly) prepared during some of the workshops.

Lithica Fundraising

The Lithica project has been maturing over years, with many people under many names. Our collective deep quest is to find and buy a large tract of land where we could live wildly and have a school for natural living. So that we can rewild both pieces of the earth and as many people as possible.

We even dream of a network of such places, so that, like the old days, we could experience a nomadic or semi-nomadic lifestyle.

Lithica is no longer a dream but a movement gaining interest in many places all over the world. It may be a tiny piece of your own back yard that you pledge not to step into or modify with modern tools.

Or the vast tracts of wilderness designated protected to all the wild things, including humans, that we can purchase with your help.

In May 2022, a small clan of Stone Age friends entered the model Lithica Wilderness Zone in Norway. We brought in some flint and hammer stones, skins and a hand drill fire-kit. We made a ceremonial opening of the vision of Lithica North, breaking a large cobble of flint with a local river cobble. We created a hearth, made a fire, drank from the stream and spoke our dreams for the future of this amazing project.

In June 2023, we held our first gathering in Telemark, Norway. It was a fabulous event enjoyed by all and we were inspired to run it again. Because Lithica is still a nomad and hasn’t yet found it’s home, this year we are moving to another location at the Living Wild School near Rena.

The vision is alive and you can be part of it!

  • The Lithica Gathering will take place in an area known as Blikberget in Hedmark. Rolling forested hills, a meandering river and a multitude of lakes are all within easy walking distance of the site.

  • You can reach the destination by car - it is around 2 hours drive north from Oslo Gardermoen airport

  • If you fly in to Oslo, Gardemoen , you can take a train to Rena check out train and bus schedules on vy.no

  • There is one taxi service in Rena, tel.62441060

  • After your registration we can assist you with car sharing information

  • Our location is situated among forests of Pine and Spruce with springy mosses and lichens everywhere underfoot. It is within easy walking distance of the Julussa river and several lakes where certain classes will be held. There is plenty of space to camp, with an option to find your own most unique spot.

  • As we say here in Norway: “There is no such things as bad weather, only bad clothing.” Which is absolutely true!

You should prepare for all kinds of weather, from lovely warm and sunny days of 30 ºC to colder nights where temperatures can drop below 10 ºC. Bring a warm sweater, a raincoat and a summer dress is our advice! We will give participants a packing list, so don’t worry about what to bring.

  • The gathering locations are so cold in winter that ticks usually don’t survive and are thus not an issue.

Mosquitos and gnats are a normal occurrence, and very much dependent on the weather and temperatures. Bring a mosquito net for the night, some natural insect repellent and sit next to the smoke of the main campfire. (If you are very sensitive to insect bites you may want to bring a hat with a face net for the morning and evening hours when insects are most active.

Understanding the concept

  • Lithica Gathering is the beginning of realizing the vision of the Lithica-Rewilding-Humans project and a fundraiser to purchase and protect lands for wild beings and their future generations. The main goal of the Lithica project is to provide the space and guidance for human beings to reconnect to their innate wildness, develop primal, ancestral, natural skills and wisdom to become stewards of the land. All event proceeds will benefit the Lithica foundation, supporting the gathering with the aim of finding and purchasing a permanent home for Lithica.

  • The exact schedule will be posted on the bulletin board at the gathering. There will be workshops in the mornings, afternoons and evenings, we plan to hold both skills oriented workshops and craft making as well as experience related workshops and community building through singing, story and sharing. A lunch break is scheduled in the middle of the day when there will be no workshops, we will designate an afternoon where there will be an open forum for participants to share or just take time off for themselves. We will gather around the main fire in the evening.

  • We encourage you to bring hand made items for sale, trade and barter and will designate a trading circle during one of the evenings.

  • In keeping with the stone-age community spirit, we’ll need some help with chores. You will be designated to a ‘clan’ on the first day and your clan leaders will let you know how we can all help each other to keep the camp running smoothly..

  • No - this is an alcohol and drug free event.

  • We ask you to not use your phone too much though there is limited reception. Let’s keep device use to a minimum and we ask that you do not sit around the public spaces using your phone.

You’re free however to take pictures, but be conscious about sharing them.

  • All workshops and communication will be in English, since we have an international team of instructors.

  • The zones during the gathering are made to replicate the vision of Lithica so that people can feel comfortable wherever they are in the stage of their rewilding. (see our vision on this website for more detailed descriptions)

The modern zone during the gathering will be practically non-existent since we want to focus on transitioning into our wild selves so even though you will be able to keep your devices with you, we ask that you use them to a minimum. There will not be electricity available for recharging. Cars will be parked in designated parking lots out of site of the main gathering.

The transitional zone is where we will be experiencing most of the activities, in this zone you can bring all your physical needs; camping gear, tools, clothes, food etc. Most of the classes will take place in this zone. We avoid using electrical/digital tools and motors.

The Wilderness zone will host some special classes whereby people may enter using only Stone Age Technology. This is an exciting new aspect that we have added to this years gathering to give you a feel of what it feels and looks like to be without modern items of any kind. We will explain this more at the beginning of the gathering. If you already have handmade, natural skin clothing, hides or other Stone Age equipment, please bring it along!

Attending

  • We aim for 60-70 participants.

  • No, not at all! The Gathering is for everyone interested in the idea of Lithica and who wants to learn more about primitive skills. Bring your modern (outdoor) clothes and gear in which you feel most comfortable to spend a week in nature. We do encourage you to try to have mostly natural colours and materials and minimise plastics.

  • We believe the Gathering (and nature in general) can be a magical place to bring your children. So we don’t have an age-limit, but we haven’t prepared anything special for young children either. Bringing your toddler or child is completely your own responsibility. We ask you to have them in your care the whole time.

Remember that the surroundings are going to be primitive, so make sure you and your child are going to be comfortable with this.

  • If you are 16 years or older you are welcome to come on your own. Children and teenagers under the age of 16 need to be accompanied by an adult who is either their parent, their care-taker, or is someone who has consent from these people to accompany the child.

  • Children 12 and over come as a full price participant.

Children between 5 and 11 are half price.

    Children under 5 are free.

  • No, the gathering does not permit dogs. There are other farm animals in the area and wild animals that we do not want to disturb.

  • You’ll be able to sign up to the workshops by putting your name in the workshop’s signup form on the gathering notice board or going directly to the instructor to sign up. Be aware that some workshops may have a small additional materials fee so be sure to bring some extra cash in Norwegian krone. There will be plenty of classes that do not have any extra costs.

  • Participants are required to have their own travel and healthcare insurance. Make sure it covers emergency transportation. There is a medical office in Rena and the nearest hospital is in Eleverum.

Practical

  • We created a packlist for you.

  • Since the Gathering is close to midsummer in Norway, it simply won’t get dark enough to see them! However, sleeping under the open sky is very possible.

There will be certain areas dedicated for camping. Bring your own camping gear and don’t forget a mosquito net. There will be many trees on the premises for those who prefer to sleep in a hammock. If you want to sleep in your vehicle you will have to park in the parking areas since we will not have vehicles around the main camp.

  • There is one communal meal a day planned in the evening, which is included in the registration fee. This will be (partly) prepared during some of the workshops. Participants can be asked to help out with the preparation. We ask you to bring your own bowl, cup and utensils.

All communal meals will be delicious vegetables with separate animal protein. If you are vegetarian or vegan please bring your own protein.

Breakfast, lunch and snacks you’ll bring yourself. If you want to cook any of these meals we ask you to bring your own camping gas-cooker, since their won’t be a communal kitchen and because of fire regulations it is not possible to have multiple personal campfires on the grounds.

  • The closest supermarket is 18 km away. So bring enough food for the whole week. On the packlist you find some suggestions on what and how much to bring. If you think you will need to drive out during the gathering we may request that you park in a specific location to avoid having cars entering and leaving the main gathering site.

  • Since it’s going to be a primitive skills Gathering, the modern comforts will be very limited. Think a beautiful piece of nature as our living room, dinner parlor and workshop space. A lake or a river as your shower. The forest as your bedroom. A latrine in the forest as your toilet.

  • We will have a basic supply of first-aid tools, please bring your own first aid kit.

  • The workshop- and campsite are in a location with limited access by road.

  • You can contact us via email at hello@lithica.earth.
